Seems like every year, the holiday items roll out onto the shelves at the retail stores earlier and earlier. The craft beer scene seems to be doing the same this year.
Browsing the local beer isle and there it is... pumpkin beer already out on display.
I'm not a big pumpkin fan, however the spices used I absolutely love. Why not make a beer that is similar? Seems like a step in the right direction.
Yesterday, I brewed my first pumpkin beer, minus the pumpkin. I dis not add pumpkin to the mash, or to the boil. The key in this recipe is a nice balanced malt, hops and spices.
10lb Maris Otter
8oz Crystal 10
8oz Crystal 40
8oz Cherry smoked malt
1oz Northern Brewer (60 min)
1oz Hallertauer (1 min)
Pumpkin spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger, all spice, coriander and orange peel at flame out.
1968 London ESB yeast.
33 IBU, 10.5 SRM
Projected FG 1.014 - 1.019
This is my creation and the wort seems promising thus far. Time will tell, but this seems like it will be a good holiday beer.
